It is the most celebrated holidays in China and some other East and Southern Asian Countries. It is the first day of every lunar year. It is called New year day in China or Spring Festival because it means spring is coming.
Traditionally, people will stay over the New year's Eve with families. And will dress up on the new year day and congratulate each other. Upper generation will give some money in the small red envelope to lower generation. People in the north of China eat dumplings and people in the south of China eat rice glue ball. Please see more Chinese New Year Traditions.
Since 1994, people in China mainland enjoy 3 day-off of this statutory holiday. Plus the weekends before and after, 7 day-off it is. Because it is the most important holiday in China and it is the opportunity for families reunion, many employer actually let their employees have more days off. Some give more than 2 whole weeks and the employees could come to work after the Lantern Festival, which is the 15th day of the first lunar year.
